Uma vez escrito o livro e enviado o manuscrito para a editora, segue-se a fase de apreciação para apurar se é ou não algo que valha a pena ser publicado. Como e óbvio, publicar livros é uma lotaria, porque nunca se sabe qual poderá vir a ser o próximo grande sucesso, mas a verdade é que a maior parte dos livros acaba por dar prejuízo, por isso há um equilíbrio delicado a gerir, e é sempre bom o autor ansioso e expectante ter isso em conta. Se o livro for aprovado, é então paginado e entregue ao revisor, em documento electrónico ou em provas de papel, consoante as preferências e proclividades tecnológicas da pessoa.
A primeira é um processo linear e descomplicado. O manuscrito revisto e com as alterações assinaladas é-me enviado por e-mail, eu re-revejo, aceitando ou rejeitando as correcções e sugestões (que vão para lá do âmbito da gramática), e reenvio por e-mail para a editora. A segunda já exige outro tipo de logística, que passa pelo envio por correio do manuscrito, em que as correcções estão assinaladas a lápis ou caneta, e que eu aprovo ou rejeito à mão e depois reenvio por correio. Ou então, como os meus livros tendem a ser calhamaços enormes, que ainda por cima são impressos num só lado para as provas, normalmente dou só um salto à editora, deixam-me numa sala privada com uma água, uma caneta e um telefone (às vezes até um café, que eu sempre recuso mas que a simpática senhora faz questão de continuar a oferecer-me sempre que lá vou), e faço lá esse trabalho. Depois, há uma nova revisão, o processo repete-se, e só então com as provas finais prontas é que o livro é impresso.
É um trabalho um pouco ingrato para o revisor, porque, regra geral, a menos que se trate de um erro clamoroso, a última palavra cabe sempre ao autor. Talvez por isso, por vezes vêm ao de cima sentimentos que tornam o processo um pouco menos profissional e mais pessoal do que seria de esperar, tal como os seguintes reparos passivo-agressivos de uma das revisões do Oblívio, aos quais respondi de forma não menos passivo-agressiva (em itálico):
62 – Entendo e aceito (é esse o meu papel e dever) a constante busca de vocábulos, com especial incidência nos adjectivos, pouco ou nada habituais. Mas uma “rocha dissoluta” parece-me realmente demasiado, por queda no absurdo, senão mesmo no risível, o que certamente não será intenção do autor.

Porque é realmente útil ter-se a perspectiva de alguém de “fora”, tendo em conta o quão solitário e egocêntrico pode ser o processo de escrita, razão pela qual muitos autores preferem que alguém seu conhecido leia o manuscrito antes de o enviarem para a editora.
E assim se passa um livro da cabeça para o papel.
